Infrared sensors or also called infrared radiators are lamps with IR LEDs that can be used to give security cameras night vision or enhance night vision. The infrared sensors can be placed separately and need their own power supply, often through a 12V adapter.

How does an infrared sensor work:
An infrared sensor is actually a lamp with all small IR LED lights that provide infrared light. This is not visible to the naked eye, although most infrared sensors do give a red glow in the dark. The infrared light makes it possible for surveillance cameras that have an infrared-sensitive lens to get an image in the dark. Most infrared heaters have a maximum apparent distance between 40 and 100 meters and can be placed next to the camera, but also closer to the place where night vision is desired. For example, many IR emitters are used with security cameras that already have IR LEDs around the lens, but the night vision is not sufficient for the desired application.
850 and 920 Nm IR light:
Infrared sensors are available with 850 nm and 920 nm LEDs, although 99% have 850 nm LEDs. By nm is meant nanometer and the difference between 850 nanometer and 920 nanometer infrared emitters is that the 850nm leds give a red glow in the dark and are therefore visible and the 920nm do not give a red glow and are therefore not visible to the naked eye. IR lamps with 920 nm LEDs, on the other hand, have a limited beam distance and are therefore often only used with cameras that need up to 10 meters of night vision.
Advantages of IR sensors compared to normal (construction) lamps:
Normal lamps, such as construction lamps on motion detection, are not really suitable for having a security camera in the dark. This is because the surveillance camera takes a few seconds to switch to the other light and a clear image cannot be obtained during this period. So it works if the light is on continuously. With an infrared sensor this problem does not exist because it is continuously on in the dark and the camera is therefore already focused on the (IR) light present.
