Wifi camera

With a WiFi camera you can secure and monitor your home or business premises. Also suitable for outdoor surveillance (garden and yard). How does the purchase and installation of this camera work? View the step-by-step plan for ordering a WiFi security camera and installing it at home.

How a WiFi security camera works

A WiFi camera is a useful addition to the alarm system at your home or office. It is now possible to record images in full HD or Ultra HD and send them to your home via the wireless network. This allows you to see who is at the door on your smartphone, laptop or smart TV. It is simply possible to view the images while you are not at home. To do this, you send the data automatically and live to your smartphone. Thanks to the developments in wireless connections, you can view the images in high quality. But to get everything running smoothly, there are a number of things you should pay attention to.

Make sure you have a strong enough Wi-Fi signal

High-resolution video images require a lot of bandwidth. With a weak WiFi signal, it is unlikely that you will take full advantage of your full HD security camera. A disadvantage is that you mainly hang the security cameras outside. As a result, there is at least one outside wall between the wireless router and the camera. Before installation, check how strong the Wi-Fi signal is at the location in question. You can do this with your smartphone or laptop, for example. Is the signal not strong enough? Then there are possibilities to strengthen this. To do this, you need to purchase new products. For example, a more powerful router is an option. But it is also possible to amplify the signal locally with intermediate stations.

The storage of recorded images from a Wi-Fi camera

To take advantage of your WiFi camera, it is important that the images are saved. Because it is practically impossible to spend the whole day studying what is being recorded at the moment. Saving images in full HD requires a lot of storage space. Because the amount of data exceeds more than 100 GB per camera after 24 hours of recording. Fortunately, there are options to limit this amount and still watch high-quality images.

Local storage or use the cloud

By only saving a certain selection you need much less storage space. This allows you to save all data yourself. Count on 5 to 10 GB of data per day with smart WiFi cameras. By emptying it every week, the required amount of space can be overseen. Another option is to opt for cloud-based cameras. Your images are stored on a server. These are usually owned by the manufacturer of the alarm system. With some brands, you get a certain amount of space on the cloud as a gift when you purchase a system.

Smart Wi-Fi surveillance cameras with motion detection

A security camera films throughout the day. But sending the images from the storage is under control with smart devices. A smart security camera is able to detect movement. The camera only forwards the images when movement is detected. This saves a lot of data that otherwise takes up unnecessary storage space. It is also possible to connect such a smart camera to your smartphone. You will be notified when motion is detected. Then you check your phone to see who's at the door.

Choosing the best WiFi camera

A wifi camera (wireless camera) is very practical. This camera is equipped with wireless signal transmission, so you do not have to use a wired internet connection. Many models do work on a power cable, but it is also possible to opt for a camera with an internal battery.

Step 2: Order the WiFi camera

After choosing a suitable WiFi camera, it is time to place the order. You do this completely online. View the warehouse stock or store stock and place the camera in the shopping cart. You can pay via iDEAL or another online payment method and the WiFi camera will often be sent to you the same working day. If you prefer not to buy the WiFi camera online, we also have shops where you are most welcome to view the various WiFi security cameras. Here we can give you tailor-made advice, so that you can be sure that you are buying the best WiFi camera.

Step 3: Connecting the camera

Follow the steps below to connect (install) the WiFi camera:

  • Remove everything from the packaging and remove any plastic
  • Rotate the antenna onto the camera
  • Connect the camera to power
  • Connect the camera to the router via a network cable
  • Start the computer and make sure it is connected to the same network as the camera
  • Adjust the IP address via the (supplied) software
  • Select the network and enter the WiFi password

Do you use an app on a smartphone or tablet? Create a network connection between the camera and smartphone or tablet. Connect the camera to the router with a cable. Change the Wi-Fi network on phone or smartphone. The camera adds a new network. Then add the camera to the app and adjust the username and password for the camera.

Step 4: Mount WiFi camera

WiFi cameras often have a simple installation. Use the screws (supplied) to fix the camera to a wall. Some models are stand alone: this requires no assembly. For outdoor mounting it is important that the camera is firmly attached. You also conceal the cables inconspicuously and preferably not easily accessible.

Step 5: Check operation

In step 2 you install the WiFi camera so that it can be accessed via smartphone, tablet or computer. After mounting on a wall or something else, it is important to check the operation again. Problems arise if the power supply is connected incorrectly. If the camera uses an internal battery, you must recharge it regularly.
