Wired cameras
Wired cameras are more stable than wireless (Wi-Fi) cameras because they use a cable to transfer video, sound, and power. Also, wired security cameras are therefore the choice of professional installers and wired cameras are the longest lasting of all types of security cameras on the market. There are complete wired camera sets with recorder, but also separate stand-alone models.
Using wired security cameras
Wired cameras initially used a coax cable to transmit the image. Later, the power supply was also added to this cable, so that the wired surveillance cameras no longer needed to be connected to a socket. In the course of time, the Coax cable has been replaced by UTP network cables with which the wired cameras can transmit image, sound and power via the same cable. Because connections for UTP cables have already been made in many newer homes, installing wired security cameras is relatively easy and only limited adjustments need to be made. If there is not yet a UTP cable from the router to the points where the wired cameras must be placed, this cable will have to be drawn. This can be done both through the house and outside, depending on the wishes of the customer.
How does a wired system work?
The basis of a wired camera is a network video recorder, which is abbreviated NVR. An HDD is placed in this NVR for the storage of the images from the wired camera and the connections are located at the back of the NVR. The connections are called a POE switch. POE stands for Power Over Ethernet and is used to power the wired cameras from the NVR.
A stand-alone wired camera uses a separate POE switch that you connect to your router. This POE switch takes care of the power and image transfer. For storage with a stand-alone wired security camera, an SD card or Cloud storage can be used.
Which versions are wired for sale?
The wired security camera is available in different models. The most popular and most common wired security camera is the dome model. This round model is a compact wired security camera and therefore suitable for most applications. A bullet model is funnel-shaped and is mainly used for filming long sides and business applications. Furthermore, there are also different models such as a PTZ camera. These wired cameras can rotate and zoom, so you can monitor a large area with one camera.
How does installing a wired security camera go?
From that POE switch on the back of the NVR, a UTP cable runs to one or more wired security cameras. If this cable is not present, you must pull it yourself or call in an installer to do this. If desired, Sitcon can put you in touch with a professional installer of wired cameras. At the place where the wired security camera will be hung, you have the choice to fix the camera directly to the wall or ceiling or to use an optional bracket for this. The use of a bracket has a great advantage, especially on hard exterior walls, that the cables of the wired camera can be concealed in the bracket and only the cable needs to be drilled through the wall.
What are the pros and cons?
We have listed the advantages and disadvantages of a wired security camera compared to alternatives such as a wireless or Wi-Fi camera below.
Benefits of a wired camera
The main advantage of the wired camera is that the stability and reliability of the system is extremely high. This is because it is a closed system. In English they call this CCTV, closed circuit television and this abbreviation is also widely used in Europe. With a wireless or Wi-Fi camera, the cameras depend on the stability of the wireless (Wi-Fi) network and are therefore more sensitive to interference than a wired camera.
Disadvantages of a wired camera
The biggest disadvantage of a wired security camera is that it is not easy or even possible in every situation to pull a cable to the place where the wired camera is to be installed. A new technique has come onto the market for this, which we offer where we work with Powerplugs with POE so that the existing power network is used as a cable for the wired surveillance cameras.
Order a wired security camera online or buy it in the store?
Of course you do not buy a wired security camera regularly and there are many things to take into account so that you do not order the wrong product online. Before buying a wired camera, we advise you to contact us or visit our stores for the best advice.
