Not all SD cards are suitable for use in a camera. An SD card for a camera must have a certain writing speed and be suitable for frequent overwriting. At Sitcon, the SD cards especially for cameras are therefore labeled with the name "Video edition". With these SD cards you are assured of the correct operation of your security camera on SD card. The different cards can be ordered directly from us online, but you can also visit one of our stores to buy an SD card for the camera.
If you want to use an SD card in a security camera, it is always advisable to choose a video edition model. Depending on the resolution, a camera must be able to write a certain number of MBs per second to the SD card. If this is slower than the camera wants to write, this will cause stuttering or the recording not to work.
IP cameras and standalone cameras often use an SD card to record the images from the camera.
SD card for an IP camera
An SD card slot is often built into an IP camera. Especially with IP cameras that are not connected to an NVR, recording on an SD card is a good solution. When an NVR with hard disk is used, an SD card is sometimes used as a backup recording.
SD card for a standalone camera
A standalone camera such as a wildlife camera or wireless camera set still uses an SD card for recording images. This is because an SD card has the advantage that it is less expensive than hard disks and can be replaced quickly.
Reading the images from the SD card
With most cameras that are connected to the internet, the SD card no longer needs to be removed from the camera to play back the images. You connect directly via the App. With a camera that does not have an internet connection, you can either view the images from the camera's SD card by connecting it to a TV or monitor or by removing the SD card from the camera. You can then view the recorded images in a smartphone with an SD card slot or on a PC and format the SD card again so that it is ready for use again.
In our webshop we have listed the various SD cards for the cameras that support an SD card under the heading Accessories. You can buy this directly by ticking it when you buy the camera. If you still have questions about which SD card you need for your camera, you can always contact us for advice.
