Night vision cameras

A night vision camera is a security camera that can also produce a sharp image in the dark. Here you make recordings by using night vision. Night vision cameras often work with infrared LEDs to shine in the dark and to give a nice image with that IR light. Infrared lighting is visible with an infrared camera and invisible to the human naked eye. Infrared is often abbreviated as IR. Pay attention to how many meters the night vision extends and measure how much you need. This night vision differs per security camera.

Why choose a security camera with night vision?

At night, despite the presence of a lamppost or other light source, there is often not enough light for the security camera to produce beautiful images. By using different night vision techniques as described below, it is still possible to get beautiful images at night with night vision security cameras.

Different types of nighttime cameras

  • Night vision through a lens with low light sensitivity
Cameras with a low light sensitivity will amplify the residual light in such a way that things can still be observed by the security camera. Lux is the measure in which the light sensitivity and thus the ability to record video images in low light is indicated. Security cameras with a light sensitivity of 0.2 lux or less are generally regarded as light-sensitive security cameras and are therefore better suited for filming in limited lighting conditions. In very low light, the light-sensitive security cameras will film less well than surveillance cameras with IR LEDs.
  • Starlight night vision
Many newer security cameras use starlight technology. In practice, this means that the security camera can continue to film in color for longer in low light, whereby other cameras that do not have this would already switch to black and white image or full color night vision depending on the IR LEDs used.
  • Full Color night vision
With Full color night vision, the security camera also continues to film in color in the dark instead of in black and white. For this, a combination of a light-sensitive lens and a white LED is used. Leaving the white LED lamp on can be experienced as disturbing in some situations, but filming in color at night also has many advantages.

When you are orienting yourself on a new security camera or camera system, it is therefore certainly important to take the night vision properties into consideration. The following questions are important when buying a security camera with night vision:

  • How far away should the camera still be able to film at night?
  • Should the camera remain unobtrusive at night or should the lighting stand out?
  • Do you have sufficient black and white images at night or do you prefer to film in color both during the day and at night?
  • What should the model of the camera, dome or bullet be?
  • Make sure the camera is night vision compatible if you are expanding an existing system.
