How does a motion detector work?

  • 24 Jul 2023

A motion detector or PIR sensor detects movement. In response, an (outdoor) lamp turns on or you receive a notification on your smartphone, tablet or PC. How does a motion detector work and when do you use it? For security purposes, motion detectors have a number of useful functions.

Operation of the motion detector

A motion sensor (motion detector) works with so-called infrared radiation from objects. The sensor detects this radiation, which people but also animals emit. The sensor is able to work independently, but only reads the immediate environment. This means that movements must be present within the field of view of the motion detector. Everything that is outside the field of view is not perceived as movement.

However, not everything is seen as movement by the sensor. Warming up or a flash of light does not make enough difference, so the PIR sensor does not recognize this as movement. That is useful, otherwise the motion detector would continuously activate.

Different types of motion detectors

A motion detector can trigger an activity. Just think about switching on a camera, sounding an alarm or making video recordings. So there are many possibilities in the field of motion detectors. This device is mainly used to monitor and protect buildings, gardens, companies or a passage.

Surveillance cameras with motion detector

One of the most commonly used applications is the surveillance camera with motion detector. As soon as the motion detector detects infrared radiation (movement), it switches on the surveillance camera. The camera records and stores them internally or externally. Depending on the camera system, you can view the images live or at a later time.

Security cameras operate on an internal battery or on mains power. You can also opt for WiFi cameras (IP camera) or a model that stores the images on an SD card or HD recorder. For monitoring buildings, fixed cameras with HD recorder or WiFi offer the best stability.

Motion detector/detector driveway and passage

It can make a big difference if you keep a close eye on the driveway or passageway. Burglars often try to enter through the back of a building or home. A driveway detector for the passage works as an alarm system and reports as soon as there is movement on the driveway or passage.

The doorbell with camera is popular. This not only shows images when someone rings the doorbell, but also when movement is detected at the door. You can speak to visitors or watch live via smartphone, tablet or PC.

Motion sensor for the car

With the growing number of car thefts, it is increasingly important to properly monitor the vehicle. This can be done with a security camera or mobile camera including motion detector. This makes it possible to point the camera at the vehicle, so that it is always monitored. Anyone who has the car in front of the door and uses a WiFi doorbell with camera can kill two birds with one stone. The home and vehicle are continuously monitored. It is important that there is a stable WiFi connection. It is possible to connect video doorbells or security cameras directly to the fixed internet. This way the motion detector works even better.
