Listening to mobile phones by private individuals:
Private individuals only have limited options for monitoring a mobile phone. The most common way to listen to a mobile phone is to install certain spy software on it that can transmit all actions on the mobile phone, such as the text messages, calls and even the locations. Although the installation of this spy software can happen fairly quickly on the mobile phone, you do need it and this is impossible to do remotely or if you only know the phone number, for example.

Certain systems exist on the black market that are illegal, but can still be obtained by private individuals in some cases. This concerning GSM intercepter systems with which it is possible to intercept all mobile calls in a certain radius (around 100 to 300 meters). The GSM interceptor system presents itself as a strong telephone mast of various providers, so that the GSM telephones in the vicinity of the GSM interceptor system first connect to the 'fake' GSM mast and only then are forwarded to the real GSM mast of the provider. Although it is not easy to filter the conversations. There are of course a lot normally within a radius of about 200 meters it is possible to monitor everything.

Monitoring of mobile phones by government agencies:
The government naturally has more options for monitoring a mobile phone. The option of a GSM interceptor system described above is the least used of these and only in cases where the person from whom they want to listen to the GSM conversations always changes their number and device, but they do know where they live or reside.

The most commonly used way of intercepting mobile phones by the government is through the provider. The providers must, by order of an order issued by a supervisory judge, grant access to the calling data of a customer. This can consist of both the call traffic, text messages and internet usage. Although in comparison with other countries the Netherlands is very much used, this is only allowed officially when it is in proportion to what the governmental body is trying to demonstrate.

Protect your cell phone against eavesdropping:
The idea that changing a SIM card and telephone prevents listening to a cell phone by the police, the judiciary or otherwise is not correct. This has to do with the fact that call groups are set up in a study, where everyone who calls to someone from that group more than x times is added to the list of cell phone numbers being monitored.

There are also mobile phones for sale that change numbers when making a new call. Although it saves time to buy a new mobile phone, this has no added value.

The only completely safe way to make calls without being eavesdropped is through the use of cryptophones that encrypt the conversation. A major disadvantage of this product is that it only works if both the person calling and being called have the same cryptophone.
