You can already buy a dashcam for € 49.95 incl VAT and free shipping! The introduction of the dashboard camera has been behind us for some time and at the moment there are many different models of car cameras for sale. To properly view the differences of these dashboard cameras, we have tested all these car cameras and compared the functionalities. When you want to buy a dashboard camera it is therefore advisable to first read through the differences in car camera properties below.

HD vs VGA dashboard cameras:
Just like with other cameras, the first difference can be found in the resolution that the camera has with the car and dashboard camera. It is often the case that the cheaper dashboard cameras film in a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels (VGA). Although this simply gives clear video images, it becomes a more blurred image, especially at somewhat higher speeds. VGA dashboard cameras are very suitable for 99% of the applications, but not for people who want to use a dashboard camera on the race or autobahn.

HD dashboard cameras, on the other hand, have a resolution of at least 1280 x 720 pixels (720p) and some dashboard cameras can even film in full HD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The advantage of HD dashboard cameras is of course the sharper image quality, just as this is a difference with conventional video cameras.

Number of frames per second - dashboard camera:
Even more important than the resolution of the dashboard camera is the number of frames per second with which the dashboard camera can film. With frames per second is meant how many photos per second the video consists of. So the more frames there are in every second of video, the smoother the images from the dashboard camera will be. Normally, dashboard cameras film at 30 frames per second, which is sufficient up to a speed of around 140 km per hour. A possibility to set the frames per second up to 60 fps is therefore especially important if you have to shoot at high speed. This does not necessarily mean the speed driven, but can also be useful with, for example, rapid acceleration.

Single vs dual lens dashboard cameras:
Some new dashboard camera models have 2 camera lenses. It is therefore possible to film 2 directions at the same time. This is especially useful for taxi and transport companies, but can of course also be fun if you want to film what face you make on the circuit.

Angle lens dashboard camera:
The angle of the lens that is in the dashboard camera indicates how much of the road you can film. Most dashboard cameras have a minimum lens angle of 85 degrees, although most have 105 or even a 120 degree lens.
