HD surveillance cameras: the future in camera surveillance

  • 19 Feb 2014

Now that affordable HD surveillance cameras are available for sale, the grainy images that are still being requested when investigations and other programs are shown must really come to an end. Also, due to these low-quality security cameras, it is often the case that the perpetrator is acquitted in case law, because the camera images do not clearly show that it is actually about the suspect.

HD surveillance cameras in practice:
The HD surveillance cameras have a lens resolution of at least 1.3 MP, but there are already HD surveillance cameras on the market with a 5MP lens. That sounds nice, of course, but what does that mean in practice? Conventional surveillance cameras normally film in a VGA resolution with 640 x 480 pixels or the quality of the surveillance cameras is indicated in TV lines, which range from 380 to 700, where in short the more the better. Even though the latest analog surveillance cameras with 700 TV lines are of pretty good quality, a lot of quality is often lost through the cables and recorder, which is not the case with HD surveillance cameras because everything here is digital and the images are transmitted via a UTP ( network) cable.

Features HD security cameras:
HD surveillance cameras work according to the internet protocol and are therefore also called IP cameras. However, not all IP cameras are HD surveillance cameras, because the lens must be at least 1.3 megapixels and 90% of the IP surveillance cameras offered for sale are VGA. The HD surveillance cameras with a lens of 1.3 MP or more have a minimum resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. This makes the display at least 4 times as large as VGA surveillance cameras as shown above. In this way it is possible, for example, to monitor a larger area or to zoom in at a certain point without much loss of quality.

HD-SDI versus HD IP cameras:
Although some IP cameras have already been able to use full HD for a longer time, the arrival of the HD-SDI cameras has made it the same again. So how there is no difference in quality between these systems does both have advantages and disadvantages. Because of this, most people opt for an HD IP camera when they only want to purchase 1 camera and matters such as controlling the camera remotely are important. For HD-SDI cameras, the choice is made again if a complete camera system must be installed and reliability and storage are important.
