Buy wireless cameras: what to watch out for?

  • 17 Feb 2014

Many customers who are looking for a camera system prefer a wireless camera system, because they are easy to connect and do not need cables from the recorder. In practice, however, it appears that many of these systems do not meet the customer's expectations, because there is often a malfunction and a very small wireless range. To better inform our customers about the types of wireless camera systems, we will first discuss the various wireless cameras that are available.

The wireless cameras can be divided into 2 groups, namely AV wireless cameras and Wireless WIFI cameras .

AV wireless cameras:
The AV wireless cameras work with a built-in transmitter in the camera and a separate receiver. At a certain frequency of 1.2, 2.4 or 5.8 GHz, the video images and any sound are sent from the wireless camera to the receiver. The AV receiver can then be connected to a monitor or recorder for viewing or recording the images.

Advantages of AV wireless cameras:
- Cost efficient
- Easy to install
- Many models available

Disadvantages AV wireless cameras:
- Poor reach when intervening wall or obstacle
- Fast malfunction when more than 1 camera works
- Signal to be intercepted by third parties

Wireless WIFI cameras:
The wireless WIFI cameras have a built-in wireless internet module that connects to the router on location. The images can then be viewed from anywhere in the world where an internet connection can be viewed.

Advantages wireless WIFI cameras:
- Large interference-free range via wireless network
- Viewable from any computer with internet
- Free video recording software
- Secure connection between camera and router

Disadvantages wireless WIFI cameras:
- More expensive to purchase
- Limited number of models available
- Computer knowledge necessary for installation

Buy wireless camera:
Despite the higher purchase price of a wireless WIFI camera, we see this technology gaining considerable ground in the coming years compared to conventional AV wireless cameras. This is mainly because most complaints about wireless cameras relate to the range and the sensitivity to interference, and this is not applicable to WIFI cameras. The WIFI cameras can also be viewed from any computer or smartphone with internet and storage is possible on a computer or special IP camera recorder (NVR). Because of this, when purchasing a wireless camera system, there is actually no reason to go for an AV wireless camera system.
